A Scouting Legacy - Richard G. Mason
Ricky Mason's Scouting journey began in Richmond, Virginia, deeply rooted in the values and expectations of his family. At the age of seven, his mother, Pearl Strauss Mason, told him he would join the Scout troop sponsored by Temple Beth-El and become an Eagle Scout, just like his older brother. This conversation, though brief and decisive, set the foundation for Ricky's path in Scouting. True to her words, he joined Troop 417 at 11 years old, starting as what he described as "the tenderest of tenderfeet." Through determination and hard work, Ricky began to find his footing, gradually advancing in rank and leadership. He became an assistant patrol leader, then a patrol leader, and eventually earned his Eagle Scout rank at just 14 years old.
One of the defining experiences of Ricky's Scouting journey was his time at Philmont Scout Ranch, a challenging and transformative adventure. In 1974, he joined a contingent from Richmond that included the first integrated crew sent from the area-a bold and experimental move in the wake of school integration efforts. Over the course of 110 miles through rugged mountain terrain, Ricky learned the importance of teamwork and understanding across diverse backgrounds. The experience left an indelible mark, teaching him resilience, unity, and the value of shared purpose.
Philmont wasn't just a physical challenge; it became the backdrop for Ricky's fondest memories. He recalls moments of camaraderie, such as climbing Mount Baldy the wrong way, thanks to an inexperienced ranger, and the simple joy of visiting the root beer saloon at Ponil Camp. These experiences helped solidify his love for Scouting and the values it instilled.
Scouting's impact extended far beyond outdoor adventures. At 17, Ricky faced the devastating loss of his mother, who had been his guiding influence. In the wake of her passing, Ricky found himself struggling, but he leaned on the skills and discipline he had developed through Scouting. The structure, goal-setting, and leadership abilities he honed helped him navigate his grief, apply to college, and chart a path forward. These lessons were instrumental in shaping his future. Ricky went on to excel in college, pursue law school, and build a successful career as a senior partner at a law firm. He often credits Scouting as the foundation that allowed him to overcome challenges and achieve success.
Today, Ricky remains a dedicated advocate for Scouting. He serves on the National Board and the National Executive Committee, where he works to ensure the program's growth and inclusivity. He finds inspiration in seeing the next generation of Scouts, including the many young women now earning Eagle Scout ranks. Ricky is passionate about supporting Scouting financially and through leadership, recognizing its critical role in developing future leaders and fostering unity.
Ricky's journey from a tenderfoot in Troop 417 to a national leader in Scouting is a testament to the profound and lifelong impact of the movement. His story embodies resilience, service, and the transformative power of Scouting in shaping lives and building communities.
